Rude & Daphne Osolnik: A Family Portrait
October 13- January 6, 2007
Preface: "It is a pleasure to introduce this exhibition and catalog highlighting the very special work of Rude and Daphne Osolnik. I am so pleased Arrowmont is hosting this important exhibition which continues the School’s long tradition of honoring this pioneering woodturner and his wife. The last major event surrounding the Osolniks occurred in the fall of 1994 with Woodturning: A Tribute to the Osolniks coordinated by Dale Nish and my predecessor, Sandra Blain."... David Willard, Director - Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Rude Osolnik
A few recollections:
"Having known Rude for nearly thirty years, it is a challenge to pinpoint just a few of the highlights that hallmark the depth of our friendship. In fact, I don't know of a single individual in the field of woodturning who had more good friends than Rude. They would tell stories about him. He would tell stories about them. And once in a while they might end up sounding like the same story. I've even heard Rude's stories told by people who never even knew him. Like so many others, they'd heard the story from somebody else and just felt comfortable in the re-telling. That's a real legacy!" ... Dave Ellsworth - 2006
Rude Osolnik "Even back in the 70's and 80's Rude was a legendary character. But he never once acted that way. Considering his years at Berea College, The Highlnads Crafts Guild, and his countless wood turning classe - there is no accounting for the thousands of people whose lives are richer because of him. I'd say that anytime today when wood lovers gather near a lathe - a part of Rude is there. The teachers of todays's teachers were all influenced by him in some good way.'... Del Stubbs - 2006
